Alec is dedicated to his wife and teenage sons. But his brother is devoted to them too, and is determined to lead his sister-in-law and nephews away from Alec’s ungodly influence. At any price.Alec’s sons are working with him as apprentices, but the struggle to survive is becoming harder. Fortunes are being made by the shipyard owners, but working in the yards is dangerous and poorly paid, and anybody who steps out of line is blacklisted from every yard on the river, throwing them and their families into destitution.

For many, including Alec Dunbar, socialism becomes the only hope for a better future. But the socialists are hated and feared, and Thomas Cruickshank, a man with considerable influence, convinces the shipyard owners to place any workers suspected of supporting socialism on a special ‘Red List.’ The result is a web of fear in which men are recruited to spy on their fellow workers, and in which the Dunbar family becomes entangled. With the outbreak of war in 1914, Donald Dunbar leads pacifist Alec’s sons into the newly formed ‘Boys Brigade battalion’.

But, as the recruits train for deployment to the Western Front, Donald Dunbar discovers that Cruickshank’s evil extends much further than the banks of the Clyde. As the death toll in the trenches mounts, tensions on Clydeside rise and Cruickshank’s personal war against the socialists escalates. But worse is to come, and the Battle of the Somme will prove to be a turning point for the Dunbar family in both wars.
